Friends, today I present to you the final article about my short trip to the ancient town of Vyborg. Let’s go for a walk in the wonderful "Monrepos Park," located near the historic center of the town.
How to Get There
The park entrance is one and a half kilometers straight from the town’s most famous landmark, Vyborg Castle. In good weather, you can walk here from the center, which takes about 30 minutes. To shorten the travel time, you can take a bus to the "Annen Fortifications" stop. The fastest and most comfortable way for a pedestrian tourist to get here is by taxi.
An adult ticket to the park for foreign citizens costs 600 rubles.
Walking Along the Eco-Route
We first visited "Monrepos" in the summer of 2018, when we explored the park’s southeast section, rich in various sculptural and architectural attractions. The main highlights of this manicured part are the main manor house and the Ludwigburg Chapel. It's worth noting that tourists cannot enter either building. The chapel is on an island, and the house is closed for renovation, which has been ongoing for several years.
Other unique attractions in this area include Chinese arched bridges, Neptune's temple, the "Grotto of Wishes," a tea pavilion, and the sculpture "Väinämöinen Playing the Kantele." However, we saw all these on our previous visit. Today, our focus is the eco-trail in the northwestern part of the museum-reserve.
The eco-trail was opened in the summer of 2020. The route starts at a point called "the edge of the world," a platform where the historical part of the park ends. The walk along the eco-trail can be divided into two parts: one way along the shore with picturesque views, and the return route through the forest.
Along the way, you will find numerous spots for unique photos. The background for these can be large boulders covered in moss or stunning natural landscapes from high vantage points. While researching this article, I came across another name for the eco-trail: the route to the distant rocks.
When planning such a route, remember to wear comfortable shoes and clothing. I also recommend downloading offline maps to your phone and ensuring your battery is sufficiently charged. However, despite these preparations, we still encountered an iron fence on our way back, which we had to climb over.
Thus, I conclude my series of articles about the trip to the beautiful Vyborg. I’m sure we will return here many times to discover new and interesting places in this ancient town. If you don’t have the time or desire to travel so far from St. Petersburg, nearby towns like Sestroretsk or Komarovo are good alternatives. Believe me, they also have many popular historical sites and natural landmarks.
In summary:
- An excellent park near the center of Vyborg;
- Vast territory with many attractions;
- Low entrance fee.
