The weather in Saint Petersburg this summer has often been perfect for walks, so today we’ll explore one of the city’s most popular modern recreational areas – "Sevkabel Port."
How to Get There by Metro
The address of "Sevkabel Port" is Kozhevennaya Line, 40. This part of Vasileostrovsky Island is quite far from the metro stations, but on a nice day, you can plan your route to walk here from the "Primorskaya" or "Vasileostrovskaya" metro stations. The walk will take around 40 minutes.
There are several public transport stops nearby, so if walking doesn’t appeal to you, you can always take a bus or trolleybus from the metro or other parts of the city to Sevkabel Port.
Entrance to the area is free. The bars and clubs located here often host various events, and tickets for them must be purchased separately.
A Bit of History
The public space is named after the former industrial site of the "Sevkabel" factory. Its history goes back just a few years, with the official opening of the recreational area for visitors in 2018.
Let’s briefly travel back 150 years. In 1879, the cable factory was opened on Kozhevennaya Line in Saint Petersburg. The production was founded by the joint-stock company "Siemens and Halske." Yes, the same Siemens company that produced mobile phones widely used in the early 2000s. The factory is still operating today.
In 2017, the "Sevkabel" factory decided to consolidate. The production facilities were relocated to the other side of Kozhevennaya Line, while city residents gained access to a new space with views of the Gulf of Finland.
Today, the "Sevkabel Port" area houses a variety of establishments, including eateries, shops, and creative spaces. In the former factory workshop, there is the "Morse" concert club with a capacity of over 3,000 people. Notably, the renovated embankment is a great spot for relaxation by the water. However, it’s unlikely that the time spent here is particularly peaceful, as there are many visitors even on weekdays during warm weather.
In addition to several art objects, "Sevkabel Port" also features historical landmarks. According to the list of cultural heritage sites in Saint Petersburg, there are several building complexes here that are considered cultural monuments. This includes the G. K. Messonier mansion, of which only the tower remains. Interestingly, the factory gates are also a cultural heritage site.
Lastly, I’d like to share another interesting place nearby. If you want some peace and quiet while enjoying views of the Gulf of Finland, be sure to include the Galernaya Harbor and Skippers' Canal in your itinerary. You can combine a break from the hustle and bustle of the city with sightseeing unusual historical buildings known as Kronshpits.
Have a nice trip!
