On November 26, 2018, a solemn opening ceremony of an interesting landmark took place in Moscow - a cable car across the Moskva River. The 720-meter route connects Vorobyovy Gory and the Luzhniki sports complex.
How to Get There by Metro
The cable car route passes through three stops - "Luzhniki", "Novaya Liga", and "Vorobyovy Gory". It seemed logical to me to travel from top to bottom, so I headed to the "Vorobyovy Gory" stop. The station of the same name is a ten-minute walk from here.
As of today (autumn 2020), the cost of an adult ticket for a ride on the cable car one way varies from 100 rubles on Monday to 400 rubles on weekends and holidays. A round trip will cost 150 and 600 rubles respectively.
Tickets can be purchased at ticket offices and terminals at the station or on the project's official website. The operating schedule of the cable car is also published there.
A Bit of History
Surely many of those who have been to "Luzhniki" or Vorobyovy Gory remember that until the mid-2010s, there was a large ski jump at this place. The structure was built in 1953. For the convenience of athletes, the track was equipped with a chairlift, but the old cable car did not cross the river.
Already in our time, a decision was made to reconstruct the buildings of the 65-year-old structures. The large ski jump was dismantled, and now a modern track is being built in its place. The cable car also received a new lease of life - today it has transformed from a purely sports facility into a real attraction for tourists.
The cable car is equipped with 35 closed cabins for visitors. Information can be found online that an additional 10 open chairlift cabins for athletes will also appear here. I did not encounter them on my route during my visit. A special service of the cable car is a trip in a four-seater VIP cabin intended for VIP guests or newlyweds. The cost of a round trip on it is 10,000 rubles.
Regular cabins accommodate eight people. The travel time one way is five minutes. The height of the supports towering above the river is 35 meters. The work on modernizing the sports cluster at Vorobyovy Gory is planned to be completed by 2021.
If, like me, you decide to start your route at Vorobyovy Gory, don't forget to check out the observation deck located near the cable car station. It offers an excellent view of Moscow. By the way, another observation deck, located in the city center, which I wrote about some time ago, is at the Detsky Mir on Lubyanka. If you plan a trip to the capital, I recommend visiting it as well.
In summary:
- An interesting modern landmark;
- If you are a budget traveler, choose weekdays for a trip on the road;
- All stations are conveniently located near the "Vorobyovy Gory" metro station.
