Yelagin Palace in St. Petersburg: Exhibition "Cabinet History"

Let’s continue our walk through the newly opened Yelagin Palace on the island of the same name in St. Petersburg. Last time, we talked about the history of the building and the grand halls on the first floor. Today, we will explore the exhibition telling the story of Russian domestic interiors of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The "Cabinet History" exhibition is not directly related to the history of the palace itself. It presents a retrospective of various ways of arranging cabinet interiors in wealthy homes. The cabinets are categorized according to their style, such as Jacob, Art Nouveau, or Second Rococo.

The collection includes a large number of different pieces of furniture, ranging from small flower stands to massive writing desks and sofas. The composition is complemented by many smaller details such as vases, paintings, and figurines.

A special mention should go to the cabinet of Alexander I. The original interior of the room has not survived to the present day, but it was recreated based on descriptions and images of the cabinet from that time. The furniture that originally occupied the space is also lost, but items that match the emperor's era were used in the restoration.
