Not long ago I wrote about the building of the Second Mutual Credit Society at Sadovaya, 34. Next to it is another interesting building — the former Tomilin's apartment building (revenue house). This structure is called one of the bright examples of St. Petersburg Art Nouveau architecture.
A little bit of history
Earlier on this section of Sadovaya Street, there were warehouses, factories, and workshops. This was probably due to the fact that not far from here is the huge complex of retail and warehouse buildings "Apraksin Dvor". It has survived to our time.
The apartment building of M. I. Tomilin was built in 1903–1906. The authors of its project were two architects — Nikolai Vsevolodovich Dmitriev and Leonid Mikhailovich Kharlamov. In my opinion, these are far from the most famous St. Petersburg architects, but each of them completed projects for two dozen houses, industrial and public buildings in the Northern Capital.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Tomilin's apartment building housed the "Russian Commercial and Industrial Mutual Credit Society" and the "Montreux" cinema. On the Internet, they write that the editorial office of the scientific journal "Cognition of Russia", higher commercial courses, and the Society of People's Universities were also located here.
The building is notable for its unusual design: you can see many decorative elements on the facade. Several organizations are located in the courtyards of the house, so you can easily take a walk around the non-front part of the complex.
How to get there by subway
The address of the building is Sadovaya Street, 32/1. A five-minute walk from here is the transfer hub "Sadovaya" — "Sennaya Ploshchad" — "Spasskaya". Today the house is residential: there are about 180 residential and commercial premises here. Getting into the front entrances can be difficult. But, for example, you can add the rotunda on Gorokhovaya or the former Ya. I. Peretz's apartment building to your route — they are located nearby.
