Trip to Agra: How I Stayed in a Shipping Container 15 Kilometers from the Taj Mahal

Friends, today I’d like to share the final story from my journey through India’s Golden Triangle. During my travels, I explored the architectural landmarks of three cities—Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra. In the last of these, I wanted to stay somewhere unusual, so I chose a hotel where the rooms were converted metal shipping containers.

Tree of Life Ecotainers Agra: A Unique Hotel Half an Hour from the Taj Mahal

My first encounter with the hotel, called Tree of Life Ecotainers Agra, was quite unusual. This small complex is located outside the city, and I arrived at night. At first, my taxi driver refused to take me to an unfamiliar place, convinced that there couldn’t possibly be a hotel so far from Agra’s main attractions.

The next morning, I had the chance to explore the hotel grounds. There were several container rooms, each with its own small outdoor area and relaxation space, ensuring that guests didn’t disturb one another. The accommodations and service buildings were connected by well-maintained pathways lined with greenery.

Although staying in a shipping container might seem questionable, the hotel had everything needed for a comfortable stay: air conditioning, hot water, and proper plumbing. Before arriving here, I had stayed at a five-star hotel in Delhi, and the service at Tree of Life Ecotainers Agra was just as good.

The only downside of this eco-hotel was the abundance of unfamiliar wildlife, which might startle an unprepared traveler. One evening, a strange animal resembling a huge bald rat emerged from the darkness near my window. At night, some kind of bird with a call that sounded like a cat meowing kept growling near my door. Besides these exotic creatures, the property was also home to more familiar peacocks, with a whole family living right outside my room.

The cost of my stay was $155 for three nights.

As I mentioned earlier, the hotel is quite far from Agra’s main attractions, but getting to the city is easy by taxi. In the summer of last year, the fare to the city center was about 360 rupees. Uber operates in Agra, and you can book a ride via the app.

Agra is a relatively small city by Indian standards, but there are still plenty of interesting places for travelers to explore. The main one, of course, is the world-famous Taj Mahal. Besides that, I visited the Red Fort, the Chini-ka-Rauza and Itimad-ud-Daulah mausoleums, and took a walk through Mehtab Bagh Park. You can find a detailed overview of my journey through the Golden Triangle in my article about India.

Have a nice trip!
